Our Makers
British Handmade Tiles
We are proud to handcraft our ceramic tiles in Stoke-on-Trent, the historical heart of pottery in England. We believe we are the last factory in the UK making extruded and hand cut earthenware tiles at scale. We are also believed to be the last factory in the UK who specialise in tube lining. This decorative technique was commonly used on Victorian and Art Nouveau fireplaces. Today, clients embrace its ability to enliven modern interiors with unique patterns and motifs.
Our Stoke factory employs 14 craftsman who are experts in these traditional tile making techniques. Many have been with the factory, which we purchased in 2023, for more than thirty years. We are passionate about preserving their legacy and are in the process of training the next generation of earthenware tile makers to keep these skills rooted in Stoke.
You’ll find their work across a range of designs, shapes and colours in our Hanley Traditional, Hanley Tubeline, Fearless Eyes, Lioness & Palms, Egyptomania and Fee Greening collections.
Italian Hand Painted Tiles
Balineum has a deep connection with Italian craft thanks to our creative partners in Tuscany and Campania. Before being hand-painted, these terracotta tiles are pressed into moulds and then left to dry in the sun over the summer months in the Italian countryside.
Artisans then approach each design with time-honoured techniques. Geometric patterns are first stencilled and then layers of glaze are brushed on by hand. Fluid designs, like the Felce tile pictured, are hand-painted with fine detail that’s built up in layers.
We offer hundreds of traditional Italian tile designs, which can be produced in the colours of your choice, alongside adaptations of artist Wayne Pate's contemporary works. Both collections, can be paired with Series S Plain tiles and trims. There are no minimums and custom commissions mean anything is possible.
European Glass Tiles
We searched far and wide to find the perfect partner for our Glass Tiles range. A striking departure from our ceramic tiles, our glass tiles are characterised by the clean, crisp lines of a machine cut edge and the luminous way colour filters through the material. It was imperative to us that these tiles were made with care and precision, and our European partners have excelled in their production.
That process involves large sheets of glass which are sprayed with colour to a uniform finish and then scored by machine. Each tile is then carefully separated by hand and either re-fired or bevelled to smooth the edges, depending on the order.
Glass tiles are offered in a palette of 25 colours across 10 tile formats as standard, with custom colours and formats available on request.
British Metalwork
Our English manufacturers create metalwork of the highest quality, including sourcing 85% of the raw materials from within the UK. Each piece, from a single towel hook to a double washstand, begins in solid brass which is then hand-soldered and electroplated in your choice of 11 finishes, before being polished to precision. Our craftsmen take pride in their work and inspect all components prior to plating, as well as before and after assembly.
Among these products, our Hanbury collection, Gotham Washstand, Mercer Mirror, Pharmacy Cabinet, and Shower Curtain Rails are all made to your specification within the UK. As each piece is made bespoke, you can also enquire about custom sizing for your project.
British Woodwork
Our unique designs are made-to-order just outside of London. Most products, including our iconic Flora Mirror, are hand-finished with fine layers of gloss paint. We offer 7 colours as standard and have the ability to finish products in custom colours as well. If steam is a concern, we can integrate demisters upon request. Modifications like these are just a few of the benefits of working with such an adept local production team.
Italian Metalwork
Our Italian craftsmen create heirloom-quality metalwork including mirrors, hardware, lighting and bathroom accessories. These pieces are produced by a family-run firm who combine decades of experience with centuries of local tradition. Each piece is crafted in solid brass before being electroplated in your choice of finishes, including Antique Brass, Nickel and Chrome.
Our Moderna and Classic collections, Agatha and Augustus wall mirrors, and "Recessed" bathroom accessories are all made to your specification within Italy. As each piece is made bespoke, you can also enquire about custom sizing for your project.
